It depends upon your research topic. You are totally correct, in that there is a very clear gender thing going on. I have to worry a lot about how I interact with women. I would hate for someone to get the wrong idea. So, I am confined to group interviews to access women's knowledge and experiences. It is always easier to work on your own side of the partition. And in that sense, I definitely have it a lot easier smoking and napping than if I was doing all that tough stuff! But you should not sweat this stuff now-- you already have one exciting dissertation project to get written up.
